INTERIOR
Muneyoshi Yanagi / Muneyoshi Yanagi
He was a thinker and founder of the Mingei movement who discovered beauty in everyday items handcrafted by unknown artisans and sought to spread their value to the world. Maison Gekkoso owns his masterpiece, the Lassi Stool. It is made of high-quality Mizume cherry wood, and the seat is made of sturdy woven Japanese laurel.
Sori Yanagi / Munemichi Yanagi
Yanagi is a man who made the greatest contribution to the establishment and development of postwar Japanese industrial design , and is one of the few Japanese designers to be recognized worldwide. His father was the Muneyoshi Yanagi , a leader of the folk art movement and thinker. Maison Gekkoso displays his signature work, the Butterfly Stool, which was released in 1956. A masterpiece in design history that is collected in museums around the world, including the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, it is an icon of Japanese design. He was also friends with the founder of Gekkoso, along with Shoji Hamada.
Isamu Kenmochi / Isamu Kenmochi
This stacking stool was designed in 1955 by Isamu Kenmochi, one of the pioneers who laid the foundations for the post-World War II Japanese modern design. Crafted using a technique called "bentwood," in which solid wood is steamed and bent at high temperatures, it is both lightweight and sturdy. Nicknamed the "Kenmochi Stool," it is a long-selling item from Akita Mokko that continues to be manufactured today, more than 60 years after its release in 1958.
Isamu Noguchi / Isamu Noguchi
Isamu Noguchi, a Los Angeles-born artist known for his Akari lighting fixtures made from washi paper and his organically shaped coffee table, is a sculptor who has always pushed the boundaries of sculpture, transcending the boundaries of all creative fields, including outdoor sculpture, gardens, playground equipment, ceramics, furniture, and stage sets. He was a close friend of the founder of Gekkoso.
ART
Bernard Leach Unglazed pot / Bernard Howell Leach
British potter Bernard Leach spent his childhood in Japan and returned to Japan in 1909 at the age of 22. Through his interactions with Yanagi Muneyoshi and others at a time when the folk art movement was being promoted, he hoped to connect Western and Eastern art, pioneering a new world of pottery. He was also friends with the founder of Gekkoso.
Genichiro Inokuma Watercolor/Oil painting / Genichiro Inokuma
Genichiro Inokuma has been active in a wide range of fields, not just painting, but also graphic design such as the mural at the central ticket gate of Ueno Station and the wrapping paper of Mitsukoshi, as well as furniture. He studied under Matisse in France and was friends with artists such as Mark Rothko and Isamu Noguchi in the United States. The Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art is located in his hometown of Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture, and he is affectionately known as "Inokuma-san."
